Turn a favorite photo into a personalized watercolor pillow with Customix. In this tutorial, customers choose a background from pillow image swatches, upload any photo, and enter a name. You’ll build the artwork in one print file, apply photo effects, and import the design into the pillow previews.

Prepare the Artwork and Pillow Mockups
Prepare the background artwork, pillow mockups, and pillow image thumbnails for the swatches. The background artwork goes in the print file; the mockups show the finished product in the previews. Use clear asset names and follow your printer’s required dimensions and resolution.
1. Set Up Choose Background as Image Swatches
Add the background artwork as an image selection in the print file. Set the customer-facing label to “Choose Background” and display the choices as image swatches.
Use a pillow design image as each swatch thumbnail and assign its corresponding background artwork. Customers see the pillow image in the selector; their choice updates the artwork in the print file.
Choose a default background and check that each swatch selects the intended artwork in the print file.

2. Add the Upload Photo Option
Enable photo upload personalization on the image layer and label it “Upload Photo”. Adjust the image area to fit the composition.
Add help text such as “Upload a clear, high-resolution photo with the subjects fully visible.”

3. Apply Remove Background and an AI Filter
Select the upload image layer and apply Remove Background. Then open AI Filter and enter a prompt describing the watercolor style.
Example AI Filter prompt:
“Turn the subjects in this photo into a soft watercolor illustration. Preserve their recognizable features, proportions, and colors. Use delicate watercolor washes and softly blended edges. Keep the background transparent, without adding text, objects, or extra subjects.”
Test with a sample photo and check the details, edges, and background transparency. Adjust the prompt as needed, keeping the winter artwork in the separate background layer.

4. Configure Enter Name
Enable text personalization on the name layer and label it “Enter Name”. Choose your font as the fixed default, then set the text size, color, alignment, and position.
Set a maximum character count that fits the design and add matching help text. For example, a 12-character limit could use “Enter a name, up to 12 characters.” Test a name at the limit to check that it stays readable and clear of the photo.

5. Enable Live Preview
In the Customix editor, turn on Live preview in the Options panel and save your changes. On the storefront, customers can choose a background, upload a photo, and enter a name to see their personalized design on the product before adding it to the cart.

6. Test the Complete Personalization Flow
On the storefront, choose a background, upload a photo, and enter a name. Switch backgrounds to confirm that the artwork updates while the photo and name stay in place. Review every preview and check the experience on desktop and mobile.
Place a test order and inspect the print file for the selected background, processed photo, and correct name at the intended dimensions. The production file should contain the artwork without the pillow mockup.

Create More Personalized Products with Customix
The same approach can be adapted to personalized mugs, tote bags, T-shirts, and other photo gifts. Update the artwork, print dimensions, and product previews to suit each item, then keep the photo upload and name options so customers can make it their own.
You can also refresh the backgrounds for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, or different audiences. With Customix, this gives you a starting point for building a coordinated collection of personalized products around your store’s style.
